The Original Mr. T. - T. Boone Pickens

This past Wednesday, I attended the Brain Performance Leadership Forum in Dallas, featuring T. Boone Pickens. I knew Mr. T. was a super successful businessman, billionaire philanthropist, and a champion for energy independence using natural gas and renewables. What I did not know or expect was his humor, quick wit, and energy. He had a comeback or a funny line for just about everything.

While discussing his schedule, I realized that this guy was always "on." He works nonstop, still makes investment calls at his firm, and constantly travels for business. Oh, he also happens to be 84 years old. Young or old, age is just a number, and this guy proves that. He impressed me, though I don't think that was his main concern.

There were many memorable quotes from the forum; below are some that stood out.
  • "A fool with a plan can beat a genius with no plan. My parents thought I might be a fool with no plan." Pretty sure he debunked that thought at some point along his career. He admitted that he can't always get the timing right (on various investments), but that his instincts of eventual direction or movement is usually pretty good.
  • "Every day [at work] is fun for me." When asked about retirement, Mr. T. reminded us that retirement is being able to do what you want, when you want to do it – and that is exactly what he is doing now. He loves his work and wouldn't want to be doing anything else.
  • "I always hired people smarter than me. That wasn't all that hard." He believes in hiring employees who are smarter than him at specific tasks, and then learning from them. Mr. T. also knows that the next big idea can come from anyone, at any level, and embraces this.
  • "Yeah, I tell 'em what to say, and they tweet it." Twitter has reached all.
